Let’s Talk About Treating Elbow Pain

Elbow pain is a complex issue, marked by explosive flare-ups and equally precipitous dropffs. For athletes, however, elbow pain, once introduced, rarely goes away without a lot of intentional care.

Impingement is the root cause behind a lot of athletes’ elbow complaints. The term refers to pressure on the soft tissue inside your elbow joint which causes it to become irritated and chronically inflamed.

This page discusses some common causes of impingement in sports medicine, outlining the motions that tend to cause the problem in the first place:

This occurs due to activities that excessively or repetitively straighten the elbow often in combination with a sideways force. This may occur suddenly, due to a specific incident or, more commonly, due to repetitive strain associated with overuse (such as repetitive throwing).

Rest is the best course of treatment for elbow pain associated with impingement. It can be especially valuable when used as part of the so-called RICE regime, which refers to the quaternary protocol of rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

When impingement grows severe, orthopedic surgery may be required. The only way to know the best course of action is to contact an elbow pain doctor and get a full diagnostic review.
